I've wondered about that effect for ages- high contrast imagery appearing to move at different speeds. I'd give a toe for an expert explanation on the exact mechanisms behind the phenomenon.

I think the illusion is triggered by the brain processing lighter areas first then darker areas, so the darker section lags behind the rest. Sometimes though an optical illusion is discovered and no one has any idea how it works, just that it does.
